The story of date
Long before dates became symbols of desert agriculture, generations of growers transformed an uncertain wild palm into a dependable cultivated crop.
The date palm does not have a neatly defined birthplace. Its wild ancestors are poorly understood, partly because people have moved and cultivated palms for thousands of years. Evidence places the crop’s early history broadly around Mesopotamia and the Persian Gulf rather than in every region where dates are famous today.
Communities in this arid zone selected palms that produced abundant, sweet fruit and tolerated heat, drought, and salty soils. Because date palms grown from seed vary greatly, farmers learned to propagate prized female trees from offshoots. They also hand-pollinated them, allowing reliable harvests in landscapes where natural pollination could be uncertain.
Cultivation spread west through Egypt and North Africa and east toward Iran, South Asia, and beyond. Genetic research indicates that western date palms also carry ancestry from related palms, including the Cretan date palm, making the modern crop the product of both selection and ancient hybridization.
Today, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Iran, and other dry-climate countries are major producers. In the United States, commercial dates are grown chiefly in California’s Coachella Valley and Arizona’s desert regions, where irrigation recreates the combination long associated with date culture: water at the roots and intense sun above.
