The story of grapefruit
Grapefruit’s parents came from Asia, but the fruit itself emerged in the Caribbean.
Grapefruit has no simple wild homeland. It is a hybrid citrus, generally understood to be the offspring of the large Southeast Asian pomelo and the sweet orange, itself a domesticated hybrid with Asian ancestry. The new fruit most likely arose in Barbados after both parent crops had been carried into the Caribbean.
Early descriptions from Barbados mention a large citrus known as the “forbidden fruit,” although the historical names applied to Caribbean citrus were not always consistent. By the early 19th century, the name “grapefruit” was in use, probably inspired by the way its fruits can hang in clusters resembling bunches of grapes.
Grapefruit spread from the Caribbean to Florida, where commercial cultivation expanded during the 19th century. Growers selected varieties for flesh color, flavor, seedlessness, and orchard performance. Pink and red grapefruits later became especially important, with Texas developing a strong identity around red-fleshed cultivars.
Today, grapefruit is grown in warm subtropical regions around the world, including Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Mexico, Israel, South Africa, and China. Its story is a reminder that a crop’s ancestral species may come from one part of the world while the familiar cultivated fruit originates somewhere else entirely.
